[00:-1.00]It was about midday.
[00:-2.00]I'd left work early in the morning to cash(兑现) a cheque.
[00:-3.00]I walked along to the bank
[00:-4.00]and found there were only about ten or eleven customers in there,
[00:-5.00]a pretty unusual number for those central city banks.
[00:-6.00]1What could make the writer sense that something was about to happen at this moment
[00:-7.00]I waited until it was my turn,
[00:-8.00]walked up to the desk and started talking to the bank clerk.
[00:-9.00]He had a really strange expression on his face
[00:10.00]—just sort of a blank(茫然的) stare.
[00:11.00]I thought he was looking at me until I realised he was staring over my shoulder.
[00:12.00]I began to turn round to see what he was looking at
[00:13.00]and at the same moment, the outside bank guard, the one with the machine gun,
[00:14.00]came flying through the door and lay face down on the floor.
[00:15.00]Following him through the door were three absolutely frightening men
[00:16.00]wearing those horrible stocking masks.
[00:17.00]They were carrying guns;at least the one in front was carrying a pistol.
[00:18.00]Whether or not they said anything I can't remember to this day,
[00:19.00]or whether people just automatically put their hands up I don't know.
[00:20.00]I put my hands up but I just didn't know what to do.
[00:21.00]For a few moments there was just total silence,
[00:22.00]suddenly broken by the telephone ringing.
[00:23.00]I remember wondering who was on the other end of the line.
[00:24.00]Nobody answered the telephone,
[00:25.00]so it just kept on ringing and ringing,
[00:26.00]in this otherwise(不然) deathly quiet.
[00:27.00]Then two of the masked men went to the counter (柜台),
[00:28.00]jumped over it and got the cashiers and bank clerks
[00:29.00]to start filling their bags with cash.
[00:30.00]While the two were getting the money,
[00:31.00]the one at the door covering us with the gun
[00:32.00]obviously got a bit of an anxiety attack and started swearing(咒骂) at them,
[00:33.00]telling them to hurry up and get a move on.
[00:34.00]2. Why did the robber get a bit of an anxiety attack now?
[00:35.00]They jumped back over the counter.
[00:36.00]One of them lost his balance when he landed on the floor and fell over.
[00:37.00]The other two swore at him again.
[00:38.00]Then they left through the door, warning us,
[00:39.00]"Don't move.Stay like that with your hands up for ten minutes."
[00:40.00]Then they just disappeared. There was total silence.
[00:41.00]We put our hands down but I just stayed exactly where I was.
[00:42.00]Then one of the bank workers pressed a button behind the counter
[00:43.00]and the steel gate at the front of the bank moved into place so that we were locked in.
[00:44.00]We just stayed like that until the police arrived three or four minutes later.
[00:45.00]They picked up the bank guard who, poor fellow, was still lying flat on the floor.
[00:46.00]There was a good deal of confusion(混乱).
[00:47.00]As though in a dream,I just wandered(漫步) out of the bank.
[00:48.00]Nobody tried to stop me.
[00:49.00]The police didn't seem interested in me.
[00:50.00]They didn't want to question me.
[00:51.00]I wasn't asked to be a witness or anything so I just wandered out of the bank.
[00:52.00]3.What did the writer intend to say here?
[00:53.00]Life as normal was going on outside in the busy street
[00:54.00]and I wandered back to the school.
[00:55.00]On the way back I ran into the school's accountant (会计)
[00:56.00]and quietly mentioned to him that I'd just been in a bank robbery.
[00:57.00]Of course, he was absolutely amazed and asked,
[00:58.00]"Do you want to come for a drink?" I said "OK."
[00:59.00]In fact,it was only at that point that I really began to feel nervous
[-1:00.00]and felt myself trembling a little bit.
[-1:-1.00]I was all right later on after I'd had a couple of drinks,
[-1:-2.00]but it only really came home to me what had happened at that point.
[-1:-3.00]4. Why did the writer feel nervous only at this moment?
