GENEVA, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski may choose to go the United States to face charges of having sex with a minor, the Agence Telegraphique Suisse (ATS) reported on Wednesday.

Polanski's lawyers suggested the possibility after a Swiss court rejected an appeal for house arrest. If Polanksi continues to fight extradition, he may face up to six more months in jail.

The filmmaker has been in jail since his arrest on Sept. 26 on his way to a film festival in Zurich. The United States wants to extradite Polanski to face sentencing for a 1977 charge of having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

Polanski is best known for his role as director of "Rosemary's Baby," "Chinatown," and "The Pianist."
