BEIJING, February 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" premiered in London on Thursday and has already received rave reviews. Based on Lewis Carrol's poem Jabberwocky many commentators have labelled film "fantastic" and "magnificent".

It differs from previous portrayals of Carrol's story with Burton's typical Gothic style providing a slighter darker edge. Helena Bonham Carter takes on the role of the Red Queen with a bulbous head and a venomous tongue while Alice is played by the Australian actress Mia Wasikowska. Johnny Depp also stars as a maniacal Mad Hatter. Meanwhile Christopher Lee, well known for his parts in Hammer Horror movies as well as his role as Saruman in Lord of the Rings, plays the Jabberwock, a vicious and nasty dragon that is owned by the Red Queen.

Scripted by Linda Woolverton the film deviates from the original but the characters are nonetheless familiar, though Alice has been portrayed as a 19-years-old, an effort to draw in an all-important teenage audience. There is a hallucinatory quality to the storytelling and composer Danny Elfman's score adds a dark and dramatic sense of menace. Several reviewers have made comparison's with Cameron's epic Avatar. The London Times suggests the beasts and lurid tropical flowers could quite easily have come from the alien planet depicted in Cameron's blockbuster. It has also become a hot trending topic on Twitter, the micro-blogging platform. One user, @MrsSOsbourne, who attended the premiere in London, describes the film as "magnificent!" and says, "It makes Avatar looks like the Flintstones."

The Independent newspaper likens the Tweedledum and Tweedledee characters to something akin to an avant garde Czech cartoon. Indeed Burton may himself have been influenced by Czech animator Jan ?vankmajer's Alice in Wonderland' which too has many dark undercurrents. The Burton film has been rated PG for fantasy action and violence involving scary images and situations, and for a smoking caterpillar! It will be released in the U.S. and UK on March 5, 2010 through Walt Disney Pictures in Disney Digital 3-D and IMAX 3-D, as well as in regular theaters.
