The early history of Cannes was quiet unusual. Beginning on September 1, 1939 – the day when Germany invaded Poland, the jury panel actually awarded the top prize till 1946. Then with no prizes in 1947 and 1948, Cannes crowned an undisputed winner in 1949.

The jury's choice was Graham Greene's murder mystery: "The Third Man."
