娱乐英语新闻:"Megamind" tops N. America box office for 2nd week

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Animated super-villain comedy "Megamind" held the No.1 place at the North America box office for another week as three new films debuted with moderate receipts over the weekend, statistics showed Sunday.

The DreamWorks Animation release, which has the voice-overs by Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt and Tina Fey,reaped 30.1 million U.S. dollars in movie ticket receipts on about 7,300 screens at 3,949 locations, the North America box office authority said. Sixty-four percent of its business coming from 3D illusion presentation, according to the statistics.

Among three films debuted over the weekend, "Unstoppable," a 20th Century Fox release about a run-away train,opened as the No.2 movie with an estimated 23.5 million dollars in ticket sales projected for movie theaters in the United States and Canada.

Starring Academy Award-winning Denzel Washington and "Star Trek" up-and-coming actor Chris Pine, the film deals with how a veteran engineer (Washington) and a young conductor (Pine) devise an incredible plan to try and stop a run-away train.

This is Washington's second collaboration with director Tony Scott on the train-orientated film since the 2009 thriller "The Taking of Pelham 123", and is also Washington's eighth film in which he played a title role and which debuted at over 20 million dollars in a row.

At No. 3 is a holdover from last week, Warner Bros. comedy "Due Date", which sells a projected 15.6 million dollars in ticket stub receipts. It is on track to pull in 59 million dollars over two weeks.

Two debuts of the weekend, sci-fi thriller "Skyline," Universal, opening with 11.7 million dollars this weekend, and was No.4 at the box office.

Comedy "Morning Glory" starring Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, along with Patrick Wilson and Jeff Goldblum, was No.5 with 9.6 million dollars in sales.

Rounding out the top 10 most popular films are:

-- No.6: "For Colored Girls...," Lionsgate, 6.8 million dollars this weekend,30.9 million dollars over two weeks;

-- No.7: "Red," Summit, 5.1 million dollars this weekend, 79.8 million dollars over five weeks;

-- No.8: "Paranormal Activity 2," Paramount, 3 million dollars this weekend, 82 million dollars over four weeks;

-- No.9: "Saw 3-D," Lionsgate, 2.8 million dollars this weekend, 43.5 million dollars over three weeks; and

-- No.10: "Jackass 3-D," Paramount, 2.3 million dollars this weekend, 114.7 million dollars over five weeks.
