娱乐英语新闻:New York City Broadway lights to dim for Elizabeth Taylor
NEW YORK, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Broadway in New York City of the United States will dim its lights on Friday night in memory of the iconic actress Elizabeth Taylor, who died on March 23 at the age of 79.
Broadway theater marquees will see their lights turned down at exactly 8 p.m. local time, the traditional curtains-up time for shows, for one minute, in tribute to Taylor's commitment to Aids charities and acting excellence. "With her remarkable talent and extraordinary beauty, Elizabeth Taylor lit up the Broadway stage the same way she lit up the silver screen," Broadway League Chairman Paul Libin said in a statement.
"Off stage, her tireless commitment to fighting AIDS as a co- founder of amfAR and founder of The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation added yet another meaningful role to the story of her life. Our thoughts go out to her friends, family, and fans, all of those who loved her," he added.
As well as her acclaimed Hollywood roles, which include Cleopatra and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Taylor often worked on Broadway and was nominated for a best actress Tony Award in 1981 with her performance in The Little Foxes."
