娱乐英语新闻:"Green Lantern (3-D)" dominates Father's Day North America box office
LOS ANGELES, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The latest comic book adaptation, "Green Lantern (3-D)," has opened across North America over the Father's Day weekend, grossing 52.7 million U.S. dollars in movie ticket receipt, a so-so performance and headed for a downside after a brief and good showing.
The Warner Bros.' superhero film, which was based on DC Comic's character of the same name, debuted on 7,200 screens at 3,816 venues, of which 2,711 were 3-D, in Canada and the United States Friday. It fetched a mid-night showing of 3.35 million dollars, which is better than "Thor," another superhero and comic book- based released this summer, before the things turned ugly next day.
It grossed 21.6 million dollars on Friday, and the receipt dropped by 21 percent on Saturday. This performance is below even the studio's modest expectations. The movie costs 200 million dollars to make, and another 125 million dollars for global marketing. The studio has a long way to go to make the ends meet.

As one of Warner Bros.' franchises to replicate the success of the final installment of the "Harry Potter" series, "Green Lantern (3-D)" which stars Ryan Reynolds in the lead role and features Martin Campbell -- director of "Casino Royale," a James Bond follow-up -- as the director, received bad reviews from movie critics and moviegoers alike.
The film has a 25 percent approval rating on the review- aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 129 reviews with an average rating of 4.4/10. The film "squanders an impressive budget and decades of comics mythology," as it was "noisy, overproduced and thinly written," the website said.
"Super 8," a J.J. Abrams-Steven Spielberg collaboration about a group of teen misfits' encounter with a eerie train accident, was number two with a scant 21.3 million dollar gate , down 40 percent from the last week. Its two-week total receipts are estimated at 72.8 million dollars.
"Mr. Popper's Penguins'' opened this weekend in third place, with an estimated 18.2 million dollar gross. The live-action family comedy, featuring Jim Carrey in the lead role, was released by 20th Century Fox.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular films, as estimated by the studios and Hollwyood.com, are "X-Men: First Class" (11.5 million dollars), "The Hangover Part II" (9.6 million dollars), "Kung Fu Panda 2 (3-D)" (8.7 million dollars), "Bridesmaids" (7.5 million dollars), "Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (3-D)" (6.2 million dollars), "Midnight In Paris" (5.2 million dollars), and " Judy Moody And the Not Bummer Summer" (2.2 million dollars).
