娱乐英语新闻:Lady Gaga sued over stealing charity money
BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Pop star Lady Gaga is sued over sales of her wristbands for Japan's earthquake relief efforts, according to media reports Tuesday.
The federal class action lawsuit against Gaga claims that she profited from the sale of her 'We Pray For Japan' wristbands, whose sale Gaga announced within hours of the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11 through her official website for 5 U.S. dollars.
The lawsuit was filed in Michigan on Friday by Michigan legal network 1800LAWFIRM while the "Born This Way" singer was in Japan for a benefit concert for victims of the March earthquake and tsunami, according to Reuters.
"While we commend Lady Gaga for her philanthropic efforts, we want to ensure that claims that 'all proceeds will be donated to Japan's earthquake' are in fact true," said Alyson Oliver, an attorney for 1800LAWFIRM.
U.S. singer Lady Gaga meets the press after her performance at the MTV Video Music Aid Japan at Chiba City in suburban Tokyo on June 25, 2011. The charity event, MTV Video Music Aid Japan, was held at a convention hall in Chiba near Tokyo on Saturday. |
"Our intention via this lawsuit is to uncover any improprieties committed by Lady Gaga and appropriate the full donations assumed to the victims in Japan."
Gaga is reported to have donated about 3 million dollars to Japan disaster relief through sales of the wristbands and other ventures.
Neither Lady Gaga herself nor her rep gives comment on the lawsuit yet.
Lady Gaga was last month named the most powerful celebrity in the world by Forbes magazine, based on her earnings, media visibility and social media popularity.
