LOS ANGELES, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. rock band the Go-Go's was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at a ceremony Thursday.

All five members of the all-female band attended the ceremony and unveiled the 2,444th star together near the first nightclub they ever played at in 1978, a few blocks away from the Hollywood Bowl, in Hollywood, California.

"We loved the Hollywood Walk of Fame even then," said Jane Wiedlin, one of the band's four founding members. "In our wildest dreams, we could never have dreamed our little band would get a star on the Walk of Fame."

"Let's just say it's a story that proves truth is really stranger than fiction," Wiedlin, the guitarist and vocalist of the Los Angeles-originated pop rock band said.

Formed in 1978 as a punk band, the group rose to fame in the early 1980s and made history as the first all-female band to write and play their own music to top the Billboard album charts.

Original members include Belinda Carlisle (vocals), Wiedlin (guitar and vocals), Margot Olavarria (bass) and Elissa Bello (drums). Charlotte Caffey joined two months later as the lead guitarist and keyboard player.

The honor coincides with the 30th anniversary of the release of the band's landmark debut album, "Beauty and the Beat."

The album, considered one of the "cornerstone albums of new wave," steadily climbed the Billboard 200 chart and ultimately stayed on top for six consecutive weeks.

The L.P., one of the most successful debut albums ever, has sold over 3 million copies and reached triple platinum status. The Go-Go's have sold over 7 million albums.

After a temporary split, the group reunited in 1990 and 1994 to perform or release a set of retrospective recordings. They have toured regularly since 1999. They are now on their Ladies Gone Wild tour to mark the important anniversary.
