娱乐英语新闻:Director Peter Chan talks about Wu Xia at Busan film festival
Busan, South Korea, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Director Peter Chan of China's Hong Kong said Sunday that his latest film, "Wu Xia," paid homage to traditional martial arts films that he grew up with, yet demystifies their typical nature.
He said in a press conference held on the sidelines of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) that the main reason he made "Wu Xia," the director's first martial arts film, was to "remind of the old films in the past."
Chan described himself as "not a traditional wuxia fan when growing up," but revealed his fascination with martial arts movies made in the 1960s and 70s.
He said he considered the 1960s and 70s as the most important era in which martial arts movies became to portray more realistic actions.
Chan said he wanted to make a martial arts film that could be explained, and that his "Wu Xia" demystifies wuxia to some extent.
"I needed to find a style that had not been made before, and I needed to find a style that makes sense to me," said Chan. " And that's why I decided to use the scientific or medical aspects of it."
Set in a small village in South China, the film tells the story of a papermaker who lives a simple village life with his wife when he becomes the hero of his village after killing two robbers.
But a detective carries an investigation into the incident, which uncovers the papermaker's true identity.
Chan was accompanied by Chinese actress Tang Wei and Takeshi Kaneshiro of China's Taiwan, both appearing in the movie.
Tang attended the last year's BIFF for her film "Late Autumn," which co-starred South Korean heartthrob Hyun Bin.
I'm glad to visit Busan again this year. I feel that the film festival is very big and successful. I hope it develops further," said Tang.
Wu Xia" is featured in the Gala Presentation section at the BIFF, and is due for release in November in South Korea.
