LOS ANGELES, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- "Paranormal Activity 3" opened as the top grosser at the weekend box office in North America, raking in a whopping 54-million-U.S.-dollar receipt, while other films debuted with lackluster showings.

The third installment in the blockbuster franchise, "Paranormal Activity 3" sold over 8 million dollars in movie stubs during its midnight screenings in the United States and Canada, an is on track for a record-breaking take, distributor Paramount Pictures announced.

Like two of its proceeding pictures which were characterized by small budget, the thriller was made with 5 million dollars. It has outperformed all other films over the weekend and took in 10 million dollars more than last year's "Paranormal Activity 2," the last record holder for top thriller opening.

It has nabbed the crown as the top launch of all time for a horror film, as well as the best October debut ever. "Jackass 3D" held the previous title for best October opening of 50.4 million dollars.

More moviegoers in their 30s and 40s showed up at the cinemas, and the movie mainly appeals to women, which accounted for 54 percent.

The Paramount release also won big in overseas market, where it opened to 26 million dollars from 3,287 locations in 42 markets, for a worldwide total of 80 million dollars.

However, the film received a C+ CinemaScore, which does not necessarily correspond with such top earners.

"Real Steel" is in second place, with an 11.3-million-dollar gate this weekend and a three-week track record of 67.2 million dollars.

"Footloose," a dance film starring Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough, is the third most-popular film this weekend with a 10.9 million dollar gross predicted for this weekend. It has grossed 30. 9 million dollars in two weeks.

"Three Musketeers," a 90-million-dollar-budget action-adventure, grossed 8.8 million dollars to come in No.4. It is produced by Germany's Constantin Films and distributed by Summit Entertainment in North America. It also raked in nearly 50 million dollars from overseas markets.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies in the United States and Canada this weekend are "The Ides of March" (4.9 million dollars), "Dolphin Tale (3-D)" (4.2 million dollars), "Moneyball" (4 million dollars), "Johnny English Reborn" (debuting with 3.8 million dollars), "The Thing" (debuting with 3.1 million dollars), and "50/50" (2.8 million dollars).
