LOS ANGELES, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. actor Morgan Freeman will receive the Cecil B. DeMill Award, an honor presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in recognition of his contributions next year, the group announced on Wednesday.

The veteran actor will receive the honor at the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony to be held on Jan. 15 at the Beverly Hilton, Los Angeles, actress Amy Adams and Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar announced on behalf of the group's president Dr. Aida Takla-O'Reilly.

The award was given to honor individuals who have made " outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment."

Walt Disney, Joan Crawford, Robert Mitchum, Warren Beatty, Anthony Hopkins, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Al Pacino and Barbra Streisand were among the recipients. Robert De Niro garnered the award at this year's Golden Globe ceremony held on Jan. 16.

In June, the actor received the 39th American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award.

As one of the most recognizable figures in American cinema, Freeman has been able to delve to the core of a character and infuse it with a quiet dignity.

Freeman, 74, began his acting career in the mid-1980s and appeared in many box office hits including "Unforgiven," "Glory," "Seven," "Deep Impact," "The Sum of All Fears" and "The Dark Knight."

In 2004, he won an Academy Award for his supporting role in the film "Million Dollar Baby" alongside Clint Eastwood. Aside from this film, he has been nominated four times for an Oscar for " Street Smart," "Driving Miss Daisy," "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Invictus."

Freeman's most recent credit is family film "Dolphin Tale," in which he played a doctor who fits an injured dolphin with a prosthetic tail. His next movie "The Dark Knight Rises" will hit the screen next year. He will reprise his role as Lucius Fox, Bruce Wayne's confidant, in Christopher Nolan's superhero film.
