VIENNA, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Six works would be played for the first time at the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, director of the orchestra said on Wednesday.

At the concert, one of the most important activities over the world to celebrate the new year, a total of 24 works would be played, hitting a new record, Clemens Hellsberg, director of the Vienna Philharmonic, said at a news conference.

The New Year's concert 2012 would begin with three works from the Strauss family -- "Patriotic March," "Town Hall Ball Dances" and "Either/Or," all of which would be played for the first time in the New Year's concert.

As Denmark will assume the EU presidency from January 2012, "Copenhagen Stream Railway Galop," a work from Hans Christian Lumbye who was called the "North Strauss," will be performed at the concert.

In addition, two works from Russian composer Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky will also be performed for the first time.

The concert would be conducted by Mariss Jansons from the Republic of Latvia. It will be his second time to conduct the concert since 2006.

Jansons said the works to be played at the concert were jointly decided by him and the Vienna Philharmonic.

The New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic was held for the first time on Dec. 31, 1939. Since 1941, it has become a annual concert of classical music held in the morning of Jan. 1 in Vienna.

The event has been broadcast live by the Austrian national broadcaster ORF since 1959, with the music integrated with the beautiful classical ballet and the beautiful scenery of Austria.

President of the ORF Alesxander Wrabetz said the event would be broadcast in the same way as usual.

There would be 13 cameras in the hall during the concert and the Camcat would be used for the first time, Wrabetz said. A live webcast would also be available, he said.

The concert would be broadcast in 73 countries around the world, he said.
