娱乐英语新闻:DreamWorks CEO among recipients of Governors Awards

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chief executive officer Jeffrey Katzenberg of DreamWorks Animation was picked on Wednesday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Documentary maker D.A. Pennebaker, stunt performer Hal Needham and arts advocate George Stevens Jr. were selected as the winners of the Honorary Awards.

The fourth annual Governors Awards, in the form of Oscar statuettes, will be presented Dec. 1 by the academy at a grand dinner at The Ray Dolby Ballroom at the Hollywood & Highland Center, the academy said in a prepared statement.

The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is given "to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry," according to the academy.

Katzenberg, who is also a successful film producer and philanthropist, was cited for raising money for education, art and health-related causes. According to the academy, he has helped to raise 200 million U.S. dollars for the Motion Picture and Television Fund while serving as the organization's chairman.

Needham was honored for his pioneering role in improving stunt technology and safety procedures, as well as working on 300-strong features films including "The Spirit of St. Louis,""How the West Was Won" and "Chinatown."

Pennebaker, an Oscar nominee, was selected as a pioneer of modern nonfiction film who has directed more than 20 feature-length documentaries.

Stevens was voted for having spent a lifetime celebrating and preserving the heritage of motion pictures.

The Honorary Award is given for extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the academy.
