NEW YORK, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Film Society of Lincoln Center (FSLC) announced Tuesday it will host a series to showcase classic old films in the week leading up to the 51st New York Film Festival that starts on Sept. 27.

The series, entitled "New York Film Festival: Opening Act", will give audiences a rare chance to refresh their memories of some great film works by directors, such as the Coen Brothers, Claire Denis, Arnaud Desplechin, Lav Diaz, and James Gray.

"This year's New York Film Festival lineup features both returning filmmakers and relative newcomers, with a collective body of work behind them that is formidable," said Dennis Lim, FSLC Director of Cinematheque Programming.

"This series, which will continue as an annual event, gives some context to the diverse festival slate but is also an occasion for us to show a wide range of terrific movies, from modern classics to cult favorites to genuine rarities," Lim said.

The lineup of the series includes James Gray's "Little Odessa", Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Maborosi", and Abdellatif Kechiche's "Games of Love and Chance", among others.

As the second oldest film festival in North America, the New York Film Festival has been bringing in some of the most innovative independent films since 1963. A total of 28 feature films and 16 short films are screened each year during the festival. Other events also include midnight movies, the HBO Film Directors Dialogues, and the Avant-Garde event for non-narrative films.
