娱乐英语新闻:"Captain America" continues to win North America box office
LOS ANGELES, April 20 (Xinhua) -- "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" claimed a third straight box office win, collecting 26. 6 million U.S. dollars from 3,825 locations of showing over the weekend to beat the animated film "Rio 2," which generated 22.5 million dollars in ticket sales.
"Heaven Is For Real," based on a 2010 best-selling Christian book about a boy who claims to have witnessed heaven during an emergency surgery, came in the third with 21.5 million dollars in ticket sales over the Easter holiday weekend. The movie opened Wednesday and earned 28.5 million dollars in its first five days of screening. The film got an "A" CinemaScore and 53 percent of critics at Rotten Tomatoes recommended it.
Warner's pricey sci-fi film "Transcendence," starring Johnny Depp, was the fourth as it opened with a lackluster 11.2 million dollars from 3,455 locations of showing. The film only received a disappointing "C+" on CinemaScore.
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" has grossed 201.5 million dollars in ticket sales in North America in three weeks, according to Rentrak.
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier," starring Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, is the latest superhero sequel hit from Marvel Studios of Disney. It is the second release of this year to reach the milestone of the 200-million-dollar gross after "The Lego Movie," an animated film. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," however, went down 36 percent from last weekend in terms of revenue from ticket sales.
Fox's animated family film "Rio 2" was drawing kids and parents. It has so far grossed 75.4 million dollars. The 3D computer animated sequel also saw a drop of 43 percent from last weekend by earnings from ticket sales, which represented a harsher second weekend decline than the 2011's "Rio" experienced, when it fell 33 percent to gross 26.32 million dollars.
Rounding out the 10 most popular films in North America this weekend, as estimated by studios, were "Haunted House 2" (9.1 million dollars), "Draft Day" (5.9 million), "Divergent" (5.8 million), "Oculus" (5.2 million), "Noah" (5 million) and "God's Not Dead" (4.8 million).
