LOS ANGELES, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Universal's horror film "Ouija" won the top slot at the North American box office in the last weekend before Halloween.

Playing at 2,858 theaters, the low-budget film took the first place with an estimated 20 million U.S. dollars this weekend, according to box office tracker Rentrak.

Yet the movie about a group of friends who awaken evil spirits with a board game got poor word-of-mouth. First-night audience just gave it a "C" on CinemaScore. It only earned 10 percent recommendation rate on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hollywood star Keanu Reeves' new action film "John Wick" opened at 2,589 locations in the United States and Canada with 14.2 million dollars in estimated sales on its opening weekend.

The movie is about a bitter gunman taking revenge against the gangsters who took everything from him. It earned 2.5 million dollars in IMAX, accounting for 18 percent of its debut revenue.

"John Wick" got strong reviews on Rotten Tomatoes with an 86-percent recommendation rate. Audiences gave it a "B" on CinemasScore.

Brad Pitt's World War II film "Fury" dropped to the third place with 13 million dollars in its second week of showing. The film has grossed a solid 46 million in ten days.

The other seven of the ten most popular films in North America this weekend were "Gone Girl" (11.1 million dollars), "The Book Of Life" (9.8 million), "St. Vincent" (8.1 million), "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" (7 million), "The Best of Me" (4.7 million), "The Judge" (4.3 million) and "Dracula Untold" (4.3 million).
