LOS ANGELES, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Oscar-winning New Zealand director Peter Jackson received the 2,538th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday for a career highlighted by directing monumental achievements "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies and winning Oscars.

The ceremony was held in front of the Dolby Theatre nine days before the U.S. release of "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies", the final film of "The Hobbit" trilogy.

Jackson told fans that he first saw Hollywood Boulevard in 1974 when he was 12 years old, on a trip with his parents.

"I walked along this street and I looked at these stars and never, ever in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would find myself here today to receive a star," he said.

Getting a star is "a message to filmmakers out there that so long as you work hard and follow that dream that can come true just as it did for me," Jackson said.

Kevin Tsujihara, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Entertainment, which distributed "The Hobbit" trilogy hailed Jackson as "a truly extraordinary filmmaker who has created an unparalleled cinematic legacy."

The "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies demonstrated Jackson was a "master craftsman who marshaled a vast army of actors, artisans and artists to create films that have become an indelible part of contemporary culture," Tsujihara said.

Born on Oct. 31, 1961 in Wellington, New Zealand, Jackson began his feature film career by directing the low-budget science fiction horror comedy "Bad Taste" released in 1987.

He received the best director and shared the best picture and the best adapted screenplay Oscars in 2004 for "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." In 2002 he received a best directing Oscar nomination for "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and a best adapted screenplay nomination for its script. The trilogy earned 30 Oscar nominations and won 17 of them.

Actor Andy Serkis, who performed in the "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and the Jackson-directed 2005 version of "King Kong" attended the ceremony.
