娱乐英语新闻:"American Sniper" tops North American box office for second time

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Six Oscar nominated film "American Sniper" continued to take over the box offices in North America, adding 64.4 million U.S. dollars to its total gross.

The film, in its second weekend of wide release, now has taken in 200 million dollars in the United States and Canada, according to box office tracker Rentrak.

The IMAX locations contributed 18.8 million dollars to its total revenue, which represents 9.4 percent of the film's overall gross so far.

"American Sniper" opened five weeks ago in less 20 theaters, to qualify for this year's Academy Awards.

The R-rated movie, a Jennifer Lopez suspense thriller called "The Boy Next Door" debuted in second place with an estimated 15 million dollars in sales.

"The Boy Next Door" received a B-rating on CinemaScore, and a poor 13 percent recommending rate from RottenTomatoes.com. The audience breakdown for the thriller skewed heavily toward female moviegoers, which is up to 71 percent and 60 percent of moviegoers are 25 years and older.

"Paddington" sewed up third place with 12.4 million dollars' sales this weekend. The family film from The Weinstein Company was down 35 percent from last weekend's three-day start. It has grossed 40 million dollars since being released ten days ago.

Another R-rated film, a comedy called "The Wedding Ringer" was in fourth place with 11.6 million dollars in estimated sales this weekend, and 40 million dollars over two weeks of showings.

The rest six out the top 10 films in ticket sales in the United States and Canada were "Taken 3" (7.6 million dollars), "The Imitation Game" (7.1 million), "Strange Magic" (5.5 million), "Selma" (5.5 million), "Mordecai" (4.1 million) and "Into The Woods" (3.9 million).
