娱乐英语新闻:"Ant Man" tops North American box office
LOS ANGELES, July 19 (Xinhua) -- American superhero film "Ant Man" debuted with 58 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales at the weekend box office in North America, marking Marvel's 12th consecutive comic adaptation to open in the number one spot.
An estimated 42 percent of overall grosses of the "Ant Man" at the weekend came from 3D version screenings. Opening at 3,856 locations, this Paul Rudd led superhero film has an "A" CinemaScore from first-night moviegoers. And critics gave it a 79 percent in approval rating on RottenTomatoes. The audience breakdown for the film skewed towards male moviegoers (58 percent) and towards moviegoers over the age of 25 (55 percent). Family audiences made up an estimated 28 percent of the film's overall audience.
"Ant Man," with a budget of 130 million dollars, also opened in about half of the world's movie markets and raked in another 56.4 million dollars overseas this weekend, according to box office tracker Rentrak.
Universal's "Minions" dropped 57 percent in ticket sales compared with last weekend and took the second place at the box office. It added another 50.2 million dollars this weekend to its gross sales figure in North America, where the film have sold 216. 7 million dollars in tickets.
Women were attracted by the new Amy Schumer led R-rated comedy, "Trainwreck," which opened in the third place at 3,158 locations in North America this weekend with an estimated 30.2 million dollars in ticket sales.
"Trainwreck," also from Universal, received an "A-" CinemaScore and a solid 85 percent positive rating from critics. Sixty-six percent of the audience was female. It's Director Judd Apatow's second best opening weekend ever, just behind the 2007's "Knocked Up," which opened with 30.9 million dollars.
Rounding out the rest 10 highest-grossing films in the U.S. and Canada this weekend were "Inside Out" (11.6 million dollars), " Jurassic World" (11.4 million), "Terminator Genisys" (5.4 million), "Magic Mike XXL" (4.5 million), "Gallows" (4 million), "Ted 2" (2. 7 million) and "Mr. Holmes" (2.5 million).
