SYDNEY, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Australians are joining global celebrations of the Back to the Future day on Wednesday in honor of the date Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled through time from the Hollywood film's 1985 setting to Oct. 21, 2015.

New South Wales (NSW) Premier Mike Baird led Australia's escapade, posting a video to social media of him traveling to work in a DeLorean - same car used by the time travelers - to celebrate with nostalgia.

Baird was in high school when the films were first released.

Rolling up to the curb and exiting in the boffin style of mad scientist Doc Brown, "I've just seen the future for NSW. It looks fantastic," Baird exclaims, before posting the video to social media with caption "Great Scott!! Turns out we still need roads..."

Baird's government has embarked on a package of transport infrastructure reforms for the state, including new roadways and public transport.

Queensland police have joined in on the fun, comically alerting the public via social media its hover board unit in Mount Isa have been called to a crash involving a silver car that plummeted into a power pole near the cinema while traveling at 88 miles per hour.

"A 17-year-old man was charged and was in possession of a license which expired over 30 years ago," Queensland police in Mount Isa joked.

"Investigations into the vehicle and what a flux capacitor is, are ongoing."

In the 1980s Back to the Future franchise, a silver DeLorean is converted into a time machine, using a flux capacitor that engages time travel when the car reaches 88 miles per hour.
