LOS ANGELES, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Music biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" and comedy drama "Green Book" took home the top film prizes at the 76th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, winning Best Drama and Best Musical or Comedy, respectively.
The ceremony, held at the Beverly Hilton hotel in the western U.S. city of Los Angeles, officially kicked off Hollywood's 2019 awards season. Run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the 76th Golden Globe Awards honored the best in film and American television of 2018. The Golden Globes are often avidly watched by Hollywood insiders as key indicators of who will be front-runners in the race for the upcoming Academy Awards, or the Oscars, scheduled for Feb. 24.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" won Best Motion Picture, Drama, the biggest film award of the night, and Rami Malek won Best Actor in a Drama for his performance as Freddie Mercury in the film. Directed by Bryan Singer, the film is a foot-stomping celebration of the British rock band Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Mercury, tracing the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound.
"Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime," said Malek in his acceptance speech.
"You beautiful man. This is for and because of you, gorgeous!" he added.
This is Malek's first Golden Globe win. He beat out sturdy competition from the likes of Bradley Cooper ("A Star Is Born"), Willem Dafoe ("At Eternity's Gate"), Lucas Hedges ("Boy Erased") and John David Washington ("BlacKkKlansman").
"Green Book" won three awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy. Directed by Peter Farrelly and set in the Deep South in the 1960s, the film follows African-American classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley and Tony Vallelonga, an Italian-American bouncer who served as Shirley's driver and bodyguard, on tour.
"That's unbelievable. I'm just so grateful," said Farrelly in his acceptance speech.
Hollywood veteran Glenn Close won Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama for her performance in the independent "The Wife," beating out other A-list nominees including Lady Gaga ("A Star Is Born"), Nicole Kidman ("Destroyer"), Melissa McCarthy ("Can You Ever Forgive Me?") and Rosamund Pike ("A Private War"). It was Close's third Golden Globe win.
Regina King took home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the romantic drama film "If Beale Street Could Talk."
Netflix's "Roma" also took home two wins, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director. It was a big win for the streaming platform to earn its first Golden Globe for a movie. Alfonso Cuaron's critically lauded autobiographical drama, which won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival, is one of the front-runners in the foreign language film category.
Sony's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" won Best Animated Feature. "A Star Is Born" claimed Best Original Song for "Shallow" and "First Man" won the award for the Best Original Score.
On the television side, "The Americans" won Best Television Series -- Drama and "The Kominsky Method" won Best Television Series -- Comedy or Musical. "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" took home Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
Sandra Oh won the prize for Best Actress in a Television Series -- Drama for her role in "Killing Eve." She is the first Asian host of the Golden Globe Awards and the first Asian to win multiple Golden Globes. She won a Golden Globe in 2006 for playing Cristina Yang in the ABC medical drama series "Grey's Anatomy."
Richard Madden won the prize for Best Actor in a Television Series -- Drama for his role in "Bodyguard."
