体坛英语新闻:Adriaanse fired by FC Twente
THE HAGUE, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Co Adriaanse was fired as coach of FC Twente, the Enschede based club announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Adriaanse worked for Twente since the beginning of this season as successor of Michel Preud'homme. His contract would expire in the middle of 2012.
FC Twente did not perform badly under his reign, but the relationship between Adriaanse and some players and staff was not good. His team is currently third in the Eredivisie and qualified for the last 32 of the Europa League.
Twente chairman Joop Munsterman called the lack of synergy between Adriaanse and the technical staff and players as the reason for the dismissal.
"We had great expectations when Co came here last summer," Munsterman said during a press conference. "We made a mistake. All parties had totally different expectations about the cooperation."
Steve McClaren is the main candidate to succeed Adriaanse and might join the squad on their trip to the training camp in Maspalomas on Friday.
"But we still have a few things to sort out," Munsterman said. "A final agreement is not there yet."
McClaren was coach at FC Twente between 2008 and 2010 and in his last year he captured the league title. He was fired last October at English club Nottingham Forest.
