MEBOURNE, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Five-time Australian Open winner Serena Williams was beaten 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth round at 2012 Australian Open by unseeded Ekaterina Makarova here on Monday.

It is Williams's first loss at the Australian Open since 2009 as she won champions in both 2009 and 2010 but missed the 2011 due to injury.

As the world No. 56, the Russian left-hander was the lowest-ranked women to make the fourth round of the season's first major. Makarova booked a spot in the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam for the first time, thanking to Williams' seven double faults and 37 unforced errors.

"I don't know what to say. Amazing feeling and first time in quarterfinals," the 23-year-old Makarova said. "Williams is an unbelievable player. It's really tough to play against her so I'm really happy I finished it in my way."

"Yeah, I served like .... I guess that's not appropriate. I don't know." Williams said. "It was just disastrous really. Maybe I should have started serving lefty."

Williams now focused more July's London Olympic Games.

"Olympics are very important to me. I would love to be there and play." said Williams. "Try to do the best I can to get more medals for the USA. I think playing on grass would be really cool. It would be fun. So I think it will be great."

The absence of The 13-times grand slam champion Williams means that Sharapova, defending champion Kim Clijsters and Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitovaare the only major winners still in contention.
