体坛英语新闻:Culpable homicide probe opened over Italian soccer player death during match
MILAN, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Italian prosecutors opened an investigation for culpable homicide against persons unknown over the death of footballer Morosini, who collapsed during a match on Saturday, local media said.
The probe was started following allegations that the ambulance's arrival at the field was delayed because access was blocked by a parked city police car.
According to some doctors, the delay was likely to have made a difference, although the 25-year-old Livorno player received immediate medical attention after he suffered a cardiac arrest during a Serie B match in the city of Pescara, in central Italy.
The driver of the police car that was blocking the way self-suspended of his office, Pescara authorities told a press conference.
"For now the investigation was filed against persons unknown, with the general assumption of manslaughter," a procurator in Pescara, Cristina Todeschini, said.
The autopsy results, available in the next weeks, will tell clearly whether there are criminal responsibilities in the case, she added.
Doctors said it was not clear whether it was a heart attack or aneurysm to kill Morosini, who at the 31st minute of the Pescara-Livorno game began to stagger and then fell to the ground.
Other experts denounced that defibrillator, a fundamental saving-life instrument that everyone can easily handle, was not immediately available on the spot.
Giancarlo Abete, president of the Italian Soccer Federation (FIGC), has said from now onwards defibrillators will be available at all soccer fields.
The unfortunate accident has shocked the Italian soccer, which made the decision to call off all Serie A, B and Lega Pro games in the weekend.
Born in the northern city of Bergamo and a former Under-21 Italy international, Morosini had an unlucky and tragic life.
Both parents had died when he was 10 years old, and his handicapped brother had committed suicide by jumping out of a window. His sister had some physical handicaps too.
