体坛英语新闻：Canada, Honduras play to scoreless draw in World Cup qualifier

TORONTO, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Canada's men's national soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against Honduras in third round of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying action on Wednesday night.

Canada failed to capture on several scoring chances, resulting in just one point to show for.

In front of 16,132 fans at BMO field, Canada jumped out to a quick start, controlling the game for the first 20 minutes.

As the game continued, the play got chippy between the two sides, resulting in five yellow cards issued by the Suriname referee.

The most heated moment occurred in the 25th minute when Canadian forward Dwayne De Rosario shoved Honduran midfielder Wilson Palacios following an uncalled foul against Palacios.

Players from both teams swarmed around the players to prevent the confrontation from turning ugly. De Rosario was issued a yellow card for instigating the play.

The first half concluded with a yellow card issued to Canadian forward Olivier Occean for diving following an unsuccessful rush inside the Honduran box.

The game settled down in the second half, with zero bookings being issued by the Suriname referee.

For the first 40 minutes of the second half, both teams had possession in the opposing zone, but were unable to create any dangerous opportunities.

In the last five minutes of regulation and four minutes of added time, both teams had their best scoring opportunities.

In the 88th minute, Honduran forward Roger Espinoza had a strike from 18 yards outside of the Canadian box sail just over the cross-bar.

Canada had their two chances both on set pieces and during added time. The first occurred on Canada' s seventh corner kick of the match when Canada's captain, Kevin McKenna re-directed a corner kick by midfielder Will Johnson with his head just wide of the right goal post.

Moments later, in would be the final play of the game, Johnson had another opportunity to set up a goal with a free kick 15 yards outside of the Honduran box. His free kick met the head of forward David Edgar which sailed just wide of the left goal post and sailed out of play.

As the game ended, Canadian players fell to the pitch in agony, knowing they deserved more than the one point they received.

Canadian head coach Stephen Hart felt the same way.
