体坛英语新闻:Olympic women's basketball: France's last-second three-pointer breaks hosts' dream of firs
LONDON, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- French Celine Dumerc's two three-pointers broke hosts Britain's dream of taking their first ever Olympic basketball victory here on Friday in the women's event in London
Dumerc, who finished with 14 points, made a shot from beyond the arc with 5.6 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. It was also Dumerc who made a three-pointer with 0.2 seconds left in overtime to give France an 80-77 victory.
Sandrine Gruda and Edwige Lawson-Wade added 16 points apiece for France, which improved to an unbeaten 4-0 record in Group B and will play Russia on Sunday.
Johannah Leedham had 29 points and eight rebounds to lead Britain, which has lost all four of its games.
Nevriye Yilmaz scored 16 points and Esmeral Tuncluer added 12, leading Turkey to an 82-55 thumping of China in a Group A match. Turkey never trailed and improved to 3-1 to wrap up a spot in the quarterfinals after Wednesday's 58-89 loss to the United States.
Chen Nan scored a match-high 19 points and was the only Chinese player to reach double figures. Already qualified foe the quarterfinals before the match, CHina will play against the US team which they had never beaten at Olympics.
Australia's Elizabeth Cambage became the star of the day as she dunked in the match Australia beat Russia 70-66. The 20-year-old Aussie maybe the first female player to dunk in an Olympic match as FIBA couldn't confirm.
Cambage caught the ball at the top of the lane from teammate Kristi Harrower with 6:14 left in the third quarter, took one dribble to the basket for the one-handed dunk. The dunk in the middle of a 12-0 run that gave Australia a 44-33 lead.
Russia battled back to close within 61-58 with 4:22 left in the game on Becky Hammon's three-pointer. Australia responded extending its lead back up to 68-62 on Jenna O'Hea's three-pointer with 1 minute 27 seconds left. Hammon's basket with 50 seconds left made it 68-66 before Cambage hit two free throws to seal the victory.
In Friday's other matches, Ana Lelas scored 23 and Sandra Mandir added 18 to help Croatia beat Angola 75-56 for its first victory in women's basketball at the Olympics, which also kept Croatia's chances to advance open. Canada defeated Brazil 79-73 and got enough points to guarantee a spot in quarterfinals with two wins while the United States beat Czech Republic 88-61 and increased its Olympic winning streak to 37 matches.
