体坛英语新闻:Indian court orders charges against 11 accused in Commonwealth Games scam
NEW DELHI, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- A special court in the Indian capital Friday ordered investigators to file charges against the country's disgraced former Commonwealth Games chief Suresh Kalmadi and 10 others in the sporting scam of 2010.
The special court of the country's premier probe agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), directed the sleuths to frame charges of criminal conspiracy under the Prevention of Corruption Act against the 11 accused for illegally awarding a contract to Swiss Timing Omega, thereby causing huge loss to the exchequer.
"Put up for formally framing of charges on January 10 at 10.30 a.m. (local time)," Special CBI Judge Talwant Singh stipulated.
The CBI had earlier filed chargesheets against the 11 accused for illegally awarding a contract to install Timing, Scoring and Results system for the 2010 mega sporting event to Swiss Timing at inflated rates.
All the 11 accused have been sacked from the sporting body. Kalmadi, a member of Parliament of the ruling Congress party, was arrested and later released on bail.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games scam caused a huge blow to the country's ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government's image, a year after it came to power for its second consecutive five-year term.
