MADRID, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Real Madrid this Sunday defeated local rivals Getafe 4-0 in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium with a solid second half display after a disappointing first half performance.
The result was in great part thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored a hat-trick after Sergio Ramos had opened the scoring in controversial fashion after what looked like a clear foul on Getafe keeper Miguel Angel Moya.
In his side's first midday kick off of the season, Madrid coach Jose Mourinho rested some key players such as Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira and Alvaro Arbeloa with an eye on Wednesday's Copa del Rey clash at home to FC Barcelona.
Meanwhile new signing goalkeeper Diego Lopez was on the subs bench.
Getafe held on well in the first half, but there hard work was undone seven minutes after the break after Ramos poked the ball from close range. Referee, Gonzalez Gonzalez allowed the goal to stand despite Carvalho clearly committing a foul on the Getafe keeper, who complained about the action after the game, along with Getafe coach Luis Garcia.
"It was clearly a foul. I was in the directors' box and you could see it was a clear foul," complained the Getafe coach, who was suspended from the dugout for the game.
Carvalho meanwhile commented that the action had been very fast and he had no idea if it had been a foul or not.
One the Getafe defense had been breached the game became a lot easier for Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo, who had previously wasteful with his chances, took advantage. The Real Madrid number 7 warmed up for Wednesday's game with one goal scored with his feet, another with his head, before rounding off his hat-trick with a penalty in a ferocious 10-minute spell, which began just after the hour.
The last 20 minutes saw Madrid conserve their energy, while Getafe were a beaten side.h Mourinho once again failed to speak to the press after the game and it was left to assistant Aitor Karanka to speak to the press.
"You can see that we are improving," said Karanka. "In the first half we had chances which we would have taken on other occasions, but we rediscovered our form in from of goal in the second half," he said.
