体坛英语新闻:Institutional chaos leaves Valverde meditating his Valencia future
MADRID, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Valencia coach Ernesto Valverde gave a hint on Friday that the chaotic situation the club finds itself in off the pitch could lead to hi not signing a contract renewal.
Manuel Llorente resigned as club president last Friday after four years in charge during which he was able to lower the club's debts by over 100 million Euros (130 million US dollars). However, Llorente still leaves the club with debts of around 400 million Euros and the currently under the control of the Valencia Foundation, which is itself controlled by the Valencia regional government (the Generalitat).
The President of the Foundation, Francisco Varona, said this week that getting Valverde, who has taken the team to the verge of a place in the top four, to sign a new deal was a priority for the club, but it appears that Valverde is wary of committing himself to coaching the club next season.
The former Athletic Club Bilbao, Espanyol, Olympiakos and Villarreal coach replaced Mauricio Pellegrino in December 2012 with a contract until the end of June, meaning he would walk away from Valencia at the end of this campaign, although he says he has not spoken to any other clubs, Valverde admitted this Friday: "the current situation at the club is not the best to prepare to give the coach a new contract."
"We have to speak again after all that has happened, there is a general feeling of uncertainty and what we have to do now, is wait for everything to calm down a bit and then we will be able to sit down again," said Valverde.
The 49-year-old has an impressive coaching CV and should he decide to leave Valencia, Athletic Club Bilbao, would probably lead a host of teams looking to claim his signature, with Manchester City also having been linked to interest in him.
"I don't know whether or not I would listen to any other proposals, at the moment I don't have any offers from different clubs," he insisted.
Valencia's financial situation has seen key players leave the club in recent seasons with Spain internationals David Villa, David Silva and Juan Mata all sold to help ease the club's financial burden, which is so deep that work on the club' s New Mestalla Stadium was halted almost four years ago, leaving the ground a half-finished shell.
Speaking in sports paper, Diario AS, Valencia midfielder Tino Costa admitted that the financial crisis at the club could see a wholesale clearout of the dressing room this summer.
"We are in a situation that is not easy and we don't really know who is in power at the moment, but we can't allow ourselves to be distracted outside of the dressing room," he said, before admitting the reality of the club's situation.
"The truth is that is there is an important offer for any player at the club over the summer, they are going to think about it," he said.
Valverde must be aware of this prospect and perhaps does not want to remain at a club which could find itself much less competitive next season as pressure mounts to clear the debt.
