体坛英语新闻:FIFA executive committee member Leoz resigns
GENEVA, April 23 (Xinhua) -- FIFA confirmed Tuesday that executive committee member Nicolas Leoz of Paraguay has resigned, citing health reasons.
The 84-year-old, who has been a member of FIFA board since 1998, announced to leave the FIFA board through a letter, according to the world soccer governing body.
"FIFA has taken note of the formal resignation of Nicolas Leoz ... for health and personal reasons," read a statement from FIFA.
Leoz also stepped down as president of CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation of which he has been in charge since 1986, and as chairman of FIFA 2014 World Cup organizing committee.
"It's time to give way to younger officials," he said.
CONMEBOL officials will meet next week in Paraguay to pick his successor from South America at FIFA, added Leoz.
