体坛英语新闻:Djokovic out, Murray struggles while Federer sails through in Madrid Masters
MADRID, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Number one seed Novak Djokovic was knocked out of the last 23 of the Madrid Masters late on Tuesday night after a 7-6 (6), 6-7 (8), 6-3 defeat to Bulgarian, Grigor Dimitrov in a match lasting three hours and five minutes.
A tight, hard fought first set was taken by Dimitrov in the tie break and Djokovic looked to be heading out of the tournament in the second set when Dimitrov broke his serve in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. But the Serb broke back to take the set to another tiebreak, which he won after 18 nerve-wracking points.
Dimitrov again broke Djokovic's serve in the first game of the deciding set and held his own to take a 2-0 lead. The following games went with serve, but in the ninth game the Bulgarian broke Djokovic again to seal the biggest shock of the tournament to date.
djokovic's fellow countryman, Janko Tipsarevic was the victim of another upset as he lost 7-6 (5), 6-3 to Argentinean, Juan Monaco. The number 9 seed crashed out in just over 1 hour and 41 minutes as he was completely unable to deal with his rival's service.
Andy Murray also suffered in his match against German, Florian Meyer, although the Scot eventually emerged triumphant. The World number 3 and number 3 seed for the Madrid Masters won a marathon first set after 7-6 after a 21 point tie-break during which he had to defend several set points against him.
Meyer then raced into a 4-1 lead in the second set, before Murray again showed his battling qualities to level 5-5 and then 6- 6 to take the second set to another tiebreak.
This time Murray wasted no time in the tiebreak and quickly found himself with four match points and although Meyer was able to save the first, Murray won the next point to win the set and take the match 7-6 (11), 7-6 (3).
In contrast to Djokovic and Murray, reigning Champion, Roger Federer enjoyed a comfortable ride into the third round of the Madrid Masters with a straightforward 6-3, 6-3 win over Radek Stapanek.
The Swiss, who is second seed in Madrid this year, only had his serve broken on one occasion, but was able to break his rival's serve on four occasions on the way to a relatively straightforward win although speaking afterwards he said he had been a bit rusty after a time off court.
"I didn't think I played incredibly, but that's not what I was expecting myself to do here," said Federer, who said that although the score may have suggested he had been in control, he had been forced to fight for the win.
Federer also admitted that he was motivated to win one more tournament to equal John McEnroe's total of 77 victories.
In other games, big-serving 13th seed Tommy Haas, beat Italian, Andreas Seppi, 6-1, 6-2. Number 15 seed Stanilaus Wawrinka needed just over an hour to win his match against Marius Copil 6-4, 6-4, while qualifier Santiago Giraldo produced one of the surprises of the morning session when he defeated Martin Klizan 6-2, 6-4.
Women's number one seed and reigning Champions, Serena Williams had to work hard before she was able to beat Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino. Williams breezed through the first set 6-2, but inspired by the home fans in the Caja Magica, Dominguez-Lino produced some brave tennis in the second set before eventually succumbing 7-5 in a match lasting 1 hour and 26 minutes.
"It was a really good clay court tennis match for me. It was perfect to play a match like this, so I know if I face another opponent like that I'll have that experience and I'll know how to play," said Williams afterwards.
Meanwhile number 14 seed, Marion Bartolli also had to work hard in order to defeat another Spanish player, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in a match lasting 2 hours and 17 minutes.
Finally Madison Keys, who produced a huge surprise when she beat number 5 seed, Li Na on Sunday, saw her Madrid adventure come to an end with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 defeat to Spain's Anabel Medina.
