体坛英语新闻:New Barca coach Martinez in limelight
MADRID, July 26 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona officially presented new coach, Gerardo 'Tata' Martinez to the press and supporters on Friday.
Martinez arrived in Barcelona on Thursday after agreeing a two year contract with the reigning BBVA Primera Liga champions, to replace Tito Vilanova, who was forced to step down a week ago in order to continue his fight against cancer.
The 50-year-old arrived after a successful spell as Paraguay coach and after leading Newell's Old Boys, for whom he made over 500 appearances as a player, to the title in his native Argentina.
One of the first things he insisted on at his presentation was that he was not going to alter the Barcelona style of passing football, which has won the club so many titles over the years.
"I am coming to continue an idea, that is why they have brought us here," said Martinez, who said he would continue playing with the 4-3-3 tactic that has worked so well for Barcelona in recent seasons
"The first thing that I have to do is maintain the players' hunger to keep on winning and if we can do that we will have a lot of good years ahead of us and the second thing I have to do is to get to know the players," said Martinez, who said he was a coach who adapted his style of play in function to the player he had under his orders.
"We will remember the style of the club and the players that are here and we will see where they feel most comfortable, while trying to make a positive contribution," added the new coach, who said he felt privileged to be at Barcelona as it was something he had not expected to happen.
It is generally felt that Barcelona need to sign a new central defender, while the loss of Thiago Alcantara to Bayern Munich could also open the door for the arrival of a central midfield player, although Martinez, who said he had spoken to Vilanova, was not giving much away regarding signings.
"I need to know the squad better," he said, commenting that he also likes to use players from youth categories.
Martinez said it would be a failure not to win a title of some sort this season and was confident he could make Barca play even better given time.
"Every team has something it can improve, despite the excellence that Barcelona has shown and there is a lot to win," he said.
