BARCELONA, Spain, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom beat reigning Olympic Champions and world record holder, Dana Vollmer into third place in the final of the women's 100 meters butterfly in the World Championships held in Barcelona on Monday night.
Sjostrom, who has fastest time of 2013, finished ahead of Australian, Alicia Coutts, who has the second time of the year, with Vollmer in third.
The race was led out by Denmark's Jeanette Otterson Gray, who was fastest at the 50 meter mark, but unable to maintain her speed over the closing straight while Sjotstom and Coutts picking up the pace, which allowed them to take gold and silver.
Vollmer was not in the form which saw her take three gold medals at the London Olympics, but was still able to edge Otterson Gray out of the medals in the closing meters.
Meanwhile Sjostrom's winning time was 56.53, almost half a second ahead out Coutts, who nevertheless gave the Australian team its second medal of the evening after Christian Sprenger's gold medal in the men's 1100 meters breast-stroke.
