MADRID, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Wins for FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid gave both sides record breaking starts to the season after the seventh round of games in Spain's BBVA Primera Liga.

Barca won 2-0 in Almeria to take their 100 percent start to the campaign to seven wins from seven matches, while Atletico's 1-0 triumph over local rivals Real Madrid in Real's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium means they keep pace with Barca.

Neither side had ever won their first seven matches in the campaign and the results have seen them open up a five-point lead over Real Madrid, who are third in the league table. Meanwhile Atletico claimed their first league win over their neighbors since 1999 in a campaign which ended with them relegated to the second division.

A pulsating, tense and physical Madrid derby was decided by Diego Costa's 11th minute goal and the striker could have added to his tally but for good work from Madrid keeper, Diego Lopez, while the crossbar denied Atletico midfielder, Koke the chance to have extended the visitors' lead.

Gareth Bale made his home debut as a second half substitute for Real Madrid, but despite forcing one save, he was unable to change the result and Atletico claimed the win thanks to their greater cohesion as a unit.

Leo Messi opened the scoring for Barca in their straightforward 2-0 win in Almeria, but then had to leave the pitch with a hamstring injury that will sideline him for between two to three weeks.

Adriano scored Barca's second goal 10 minutes into the second half and the league leaders were able to control the game from that point, with young defender, Marc Bartra putting in a good display.

Sunday began with Levante taking a 1-0 win away to Osasuna thanks to a goal from Jordi Xumetra, who scored after the rebound from a controversial penalty awarded in the closing minutes for the visitors.

The day continued with surprises as Elche won 1-0 away to Celta Vigo with a 63rd minute goal from Javi Marquez in a game in which Celta failed to turn possession into goals. Meanwhile Getafe sprang to life as two goals from Adrian Colunga in the last 17 minutes saw them win 2-0 away to Espanyol.

Finally Betis ended Villarreal's unbeaten run with a 1-0 win in the Benito Villamarin Stadium. Nosa's goal towards the end of the first half was the difference between two sides that struggled to produce their best football on a terrible playing surface.

Real Sociedad and Sevilla played out a thrilling 1-1 draw in the Anoeta Stadium on Saturday. Real Sociedad enjoyed most of the possession but fell behind after 18 minutes to a goal from Jairo, but were finally rewarded for their efforts when Antoine Griezmann fired home from close range after 66 minutes.

Jonas Goncalves' fourth goal of the season gave Valencia a 1-0 home win against Rayo Vallecano and their third win in seven days.

The round of games ends on Monday when Athletic Club Bilbao visit Granada knowing a win will lift them into the top four above Villarreal and leave them just one point behind Real Madrid.
