BUENOS AIRES, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Argentine tennis player Juan Martin Del Potro, number 7 in the world ranking, on Sunday announced he retired from Indian Wells Masters 1,000 tournament held in California, United States, due to the pain in his left wrist.

Del Potro will lose 600 points in the ranking, since last year he had been finalist in the event where he was defeated by Spanish Rafael Nadal.

"I am sorry to tell you that I will not play Indian Wells' singles because I still feel discomfort in the wrist. Playing doubles helped me realize that I am not yet in good condition," said Del Potro.

"I will have some days before the beginning of Miami tournament. I will follow doctor (Richard) Berger's treatment hoping I will be able to play there," said Del Potro, U.S. Open champion in 2009 in Facebook.

"I also thank you for your support messages," he added.

The 25-year-old Argentine player was going to debut at Indian Wells on Sunday against Spanish Feliciano Lopez.

On Saturday, Del Potro played doubles together with Croatian Marin Cilic against the Canadian couple, but he felt discomfort in the wrist.

The wrist injury has affected Del Potro during the current season, forcing him also to retire from Dubai's tour at the end of February.

In 2010, Del Potro underwent a right-wrist surgery and was inactive almost the whole year.
