RIO DE JANEIRO, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Former Ballon d'Or winner Rivaldo has announced his retirement from football.
The 41-year-old used Twitter on Saturday to express his gratitude for a decorated professional career that began in 1991.
"With tears in my eyes I'd like to give thanks to God, my family and for all the support I have received in 24 years as a player," Rivaldo said.
"Today I'm announcing to my fans around the world that my story as a player has reached its end."
Rivaldo is considered one of the greatest players in Barcelona's history, having scored 86 goals in 157 appearances for the Blaugrana from an attacking midfield position.
After leaving the Camp Nou in 2002 he had spells in Italy, Greece, Uzbekistan and Angola before ending his career with Brazil's Mogi Mirim, where is currently president.
Rivaldo was also a part of Brazil's 2002 World Cup-winning team and scored 34 goals in 74 matches for his country.
He won the prestigious Ballon d'Or in 1999 and was named player of the tournament at the Copa America the same year, which Brazil won.
