BERLIN, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Monchengladbach increased Hamburg's relegation worries while Bremen snatched pivotal point at Hannover to close the 28th round of Bundesliga on Sunday.

Borussia Monchengladbach remained on course of the European business following a 3-1 win over relegation-threatened Hamburg, who suffered their 16th loss of the season.

Both sides staged a slow start as both defence lines neutralized offensive actions. Nevertheless, the visitors from Hamburg broke the deadlock out of the blue when Jacques Zoua headed home Hakan Calhanoglu's cross inside the box at the 28th minute.

It was a short-lived joy by the "Rothosen" since Filip Daems restored the party with a rebound following a handball penalty at the 37th minute. The hosts nearly grabbed the lead just before the break but Juan Arango failed with only Hamburg custodian Rene Adler to beat.

After the restart goal-scoring opportunities remained a rare occurrence. As a consequence the 53,650 spectators had to wait until the 75th minute before Max Kruse chipped into the path of Raffael, who rounded Rene Adler making it 2-1 on the scoreboards.

The hosts were not done with the scoring whereas Hamburg were unable to put up some resistance as Alvaro Dominguez made use of a flicked on corner to extend the lead to 3-1 three minutes later.

Monchengladbach remain on sixth place and in touching distance of an UEFA Champions League berth while second to last Hamburg struggle to stay in the Bundesliga.

Elsewhere, Bremen came from behind to beat Hannover 2-1 on the road at the Northern derby. With the result mid-table Bremen increased their distance to the drop zone whilst Hannover suffered a setback as they slumped from 12th to 13th place. Both clubs cloud have sealed a triumph but Bremen reaped the win with a last grasp goal by Sebastian Proedl.

Szabolcs Huszti ensured the opener for the "Reds" when his free kick found a gap in the wall just before the break. Bremen responded after the restart through Franco die Santo, who equalized from 10 meters after a cross by Eljero Elia at the 57th minute.

In the dying minutes of the game both teams pressed for the winner but it was the visitors who had the better end as Proedl headed home from five meters the final 2-1 score.
