体坛英语新闻:Penalty on Mexico's Cruz Azul goalie revoked

2014-04-24来源:Xinhuanet

MEXICO CITY, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A regional football body announced Tuesday it has revoked a two-game suspension against the goalkeeper of Mexico's Cruz Azul team, Jesus Corona.

The Appeals Committee of the Confederation of North and Central American and Caribbean Football Associations (Concacaf) announced the decision, which allows Corona to play in Wednesday's League of Champions final.

After reviewing video footage of the supposed misdeed that gave rise to the penalty, during the second leg of a semifinal match between Cruz Azul and Tijuana's Xolos, on April 9, the committee decided to overturn the two-game suspension.

On April 15, Concacaf notified the team that Corona would be barred from three games, one for having been expelled from the match due to a brawl in the final minute, and two for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Cruz Azul appealed the decision and called on the Concacaf to scale back the penalty to just one game, but after watching the footage and consulting with the line judges, the committee said it saw no evidence of conduct justifying the penalties.

Corona is now free to play in the match against the team of Toluca, capital of central Mexico State, at the city's Nemesio Diez Stadium.

The winner of the match will go on to represent the regional confederation at the FIFA Club World Cup in Morroco at the end of the year.
