RIO DE JANEIRO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- A football fan has died after being hit by a toilet bowl during a Brazilian Serie B match in the World Cup host city of Recife.

Paulo Ricardo Gomes da Silva, 26, died on impact after the object was dropped by a fan from an upper tier of the Arruda stadium in northeastern Brazil.

Three other people were also reportedly injured from toilet bowls ripped out of the venue's restrooms.

The violence occurred within kilometers of the Arena Pernambuco stadium, which will host five World Cup matches in June and July.

Brazil's Supreme Tribunal of Sporting Justice (STJD) ordered the Arruda stadium's closure pending an investigation.

"They killed my son and me too -- I would not wish the pain I am suffering today on anybody," Silva's mother, Joelma, told local radio.

The episode raises fresh doubts about Brazil's ability to guarantee fans' safety during the World Cup, to be held in 12 cities from June 12 to July 13.

In February a fan was killed by hooligans wielding iron bars in the southeastern city of Sao Paulo.

Weeks earlier, three were shot outside the Arena das Dunas World Cup stadium in Natal - the second football-related shooting at the venue in six months.

In December, dozens were injured during a crowd riot at the Brazilian top-flight match between Atletico Paranaense and Vasco da Gama in the southern city of Joinville.

The Brazilian government is planning the largest security operation ever at a World Cup by deploying 170,000 police, military and secret service personnel during the event.
