体坛英语新闻:Obiri, Cherono target at Chinese Wang Junxia's 3,000m world record
NAIROBI, May 10 (Xinhua) -- A triumphant Kenyan contingent to the IAAF Doha Diamond League in Qatar returned home Saturday and immediately announced their attempt to break two world records.
China's Wang Junxia's long-standing 3,000m world record of 8:06.11 since 1993 and Moroccan legend Hicham El Guerrouj's world record of 3:26.00 set in Rome in 1998 are the targets.
In Doha on Friday, world 1,500m bronze medalist Hellen Obiri and Mercy Cherono, silver medalist over 5,000m, reminded everyone that the two world records can be beaten.
"I think the 3,000m world record can be broken. We could run much faster in Doha but the pace making was not so good," said Cherono, who was second to Obiri.
On her part, Obiri, who made a last minute decision to compete in the event in the Qatari capital, said she is ready to try to break the record this year.
"With good pace making and good conditions, I think the world record can be broken. It is not impossible," chipped in Obiri.
In a thrilling race, Obiri out-sprinted her compatriot in the final few meters to cross the line in 8:20.68, the fastest time ever outdoors by anyone other than four Chinese runners, headed by Wang, who posted phenomenal times on home soil at the 1993 National Games in Beijing.
