NANJING, China, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's Liang Xioajing won the women's 100m after race favourite Ewa Nikola Swoboda of Poland was disqualified for a false start.

Swoboda was first ranked after the qualification round with a PB of 11.30s, but appeared to tumble forward in the moments before the start and was disqualified. She was ushered from the track, very visibly upset.

When the race was restarted, Liang clocked 11.65s to lead home ahead of Paraskevi Andreou of Cyprus and Sam Geddes of Australia.

"I really enjoyed the race," said Liang. "When I was on the track there was so much applause, so I felt really excited. I didn't feel any pressure today. I just wanted to do my best. I never thought I would be standing on the podium today.

"I didn't expect that the Polish athlete (SWOBODA) to be disqualified today. I just wanted to run as fast as I could and I wanted China to be proud of me.

"I want to dedicate this gold medal to my family. I love the Chinese people. Thank you for your support," added the 17-year-old.

Andreou said she was pleased to win silver.

"I felt like it was the first race of my life," she said.

"My timing is not very good but it's ok - I still won the bronze medal. I'm very happy with that. I dedicate this to my family first and then my coach."

In the women's discus, Sun Kangping set a personal best of 52.79m to win the gold. Al'Ona Byelyakova of Ukraine recorded 51.64m for silver and Lara Kempka of Germany 50.70m for bronze.

In the women's 800m, Martha Bissah of Ghana won the gold medal in a personal best time of 2:04.90, ahead of Hawi Alemu Negeri of Ethiopia and Mareen Kalis of Germany. The latter pair were separated at the finish by just 2/100ths of a second.
