体坛英语新闻:33 Olympic winners lead China squad for Asian Games
BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Swimmer Sun Yang and badminton superstar Lin Dan among 33 Olympic champions will lead China to extend their dominance at the Incheon Asian Games as a 1,328-member delegation was officially unveiled on Wednesday.
It is the largest Chinese team for an overseas Asiad, said deputy chef de mission Xiao Tian in a conference Wednesday afternoon.
The delegation includes 897 athletes, among whom 288 have Olympic and Asian Games experience.
Xiao said it was "a young team" as the average age of the competitors are 23 while 68 percent of the athletes are making their debuts in Incheon.
"They are lacking in experience at big sport events," he said.
China is seeking to top the Asian Games for the eighth straight time since 1982.
"Our aim is to try to lead in both gold medal tally and overall medal table," said Xiao.
Chef de mission Liu Peng noted that China also needs to make breakthrough in football, basketball and volleyball.
"We have no advantage in these events in Asia," he said. "At the Incheon Asian Games, we will meet lots of difficulties and pressure.
"Every member of the 'three big ball games' teams should have an enormous sense of mission and responsibility and deliver their best performance for Chinese fans."
About 10,000 athletes and 4,000 officials from 45 countries and regions are expected to take part in the Sept. 19-Oct. 4 Games that features 36 events and 439 disciplines.
