体坛英语新闻:Europe succeeds in defending 2014 Ryder Cup trophy

GLENEAGLES, Britain, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The defending champion Europe team won the 2014 Ryder Cup over the United States team by 16.5 to 11.5 late Sunday at Gleneagles in central Scotland.

Welsh rookie Jamie Donaldson beat Keegan Bradley of the U.S. team 4 to 3, reaching the 14.5 needed to win the Cup outright for the 40th Ryder Cup. The outcome was confirmed with four matches still on the course.

For the 11th singles matches, Lee Westwood of the Europe team competed with Jimmy Walker of the U.S. team 2 to 3, making the team scores at 16 to 11.

In the end, Victor Dubuisson from Europe and Zach Johnson from the United states halved in the 12th singles matches, leading to the overall result at 16.5 to 11.5.

At the trophy presentation ceremony, Europe team captain Paul McGinley said, "I'm very proud of every one of these players", hailing the U.S. team and captain Tom Watson for winning in terms of the spirit of golf.

For his part, Tom Watson said his team played with pride and honor, facing the challenge. He also congratulated the Europe team for their strong performance. The U.S. team hasn't won a Ryder Cup on foreign soil since 1993.

The outgoing Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond presented the Ryder Cup trophy to McGinley.

On the last day of the biennial golf match, 12 singles were held to achieve the decisive result, after Europe took the commanding lead by 10-6 and 5-3 respectively at the end of Saturday's and Friday's match.

This is the second time that Scotland has hosted the Ryder Cup, with the previous competition held at Muirfield in Edinburgh in 1973.

In last Ryder Cup match, Europe defeated the United States by 14.5 points to 13.5 in 2012 at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, the United States.

The 2016 Ryder Cup is scheduled to be held at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, the U.S., during the week of Sept. 27, 2016 to Oct. 2, 2016.
