体坛英语新闻:Leverkusen avoid disgrace, Hamburg and Frankfurt crash out of German Cup
BERLIN, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Leverkusen avoided a disgrace against fourth division side Magdeburg on penalties while Bayern eliminated Hamburg 3-0 and Monchengladbach stopped Frankfurt in the German Cup on Wednesday.
Goalkeeper Bernd Leno denied three penalties at the penalty shoot-out to secure the round of the last sixteen for ten-man Leverkusen.
Leverkusen secured a perfect start on the road with just three minutes into the game as Hakan Calhanoglu scored the opener with a dead ball goal from 30 meters.
It was a short-lived joy by the top-flight club as Magdeburg fought back at the 28th minute. Christoph Siefkes utilized a fast break to restore parity from 13 meters following a turnover by Kyriakos Papadopoulos.
The equalizer threw the "Werkself" off track meanwhile Magdeburg focused on counter attacks. Despite ball possession Leverkusen lacked in ideas to overcome Magdeburg's well- positioned defense.
Leverkusen became desperate when Heung Min Son was sent off with a straight red card, for a violent conduct, at the 78th minute. Despite being ten men the visitors rattled the woodwork just before the overtime through Papadopoulos's header.
However, Magdeburg took the 2-1 lead at the 111th minute following a hammer from 20 meters into the top left corner by Niklas Brandt. The surprise was within Magdeburg's reach but Papadopoulos equalized the scores only five minutes later to force the fourth division team into a dramatic penalty shoot out, in which goalkeeper Bernd Leno saved three penalties to turn the tides.
Bayern Munich marches with a 3-1 victory over Hamburg into the last sixteen. The defending champions smoothed the way for the win with two first-half goals. Robert Lewandowski capitalized on a moment of madness by Hamburg defender Heiko Westermann to break the deadlock with a follow up shot at the 7th minute.
David Alaba doubled the lead for the "Bavarians" with a left footed hammer from 30 meters into the top left corner.
Hamburg were unable to stop Bayern as Franck Ribery put the game beyond doubt at the 55th minute before Hamburg reduced the lead to 3-1 out of the blue through Pierre Michel Lasogga with five minutes remaining.
Eintracht Frankfurt crash out of the German Cup as Monchengladbach edged the "Eagles" 2-1.
Monchengladbach's Thorgan Hazard put his side up front at the 17th minute before Ibrahima Traore made it 2-0 on the scoreboards. Frankfurt reduced the arrears as Vaclav Kadlec slotted home from sharp angle with one minute remaining. However, Frankfurt's comeback started too late.
Elsewhere, 1860 Munich lost 5-2 to Freiburg by courtesy of Admir Mehmedi's second-half hat trick, Hoffenheim rout FSV Frankfurt 5-1, Wolfsburg crushed Heidenheim 4-1, Leipzig overpowered Aue 3-1 in overtime and Braunschweig edged Wuerzburg 1- 0.
