体坛英语新闻：Gerrard gets new contract with Liverpool

LONDON, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Struggling Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said Monday that the 34-year-old captain Steven Gerrard got a new contract with the club.

Rodgers told a press conference,"in terms of the club the latest is that Steven Gerrard has been offered a contract here."

Gerrard, the former England midfielder, has spent his entire 16-year professional career at home town side Liverpool. His current contract will expire in May.

In October Gerrard said he could leave Anfield if he wasn't offered a new deal.

In Liverpool's 1-0 win over Stoke at Anfield on Saturday, Gerrard dropped to the bench and Lucas Leiva occupied his midfield position.

Asked on Monday if there was a rift between himself and Gerrard, Rodgers said: "No, 150 percent no."

As star striker Luis Suarez left Anfield and Daniel Sturridge has been sidelined through injury since August, Liverpool now witness 16 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
