体坛英语新闻:Serbia remain victorious, Germany and Spain lose in EuroBasket 2015
BERLIN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Serbia reaped their third win in a row against Iceland whilst Turkey flabbergasted Germany 80-75 and Italy upset Spain 105-98 to close day three in Group B of EuroBasket's 2015 here on Tuesday.
Serbia cruised 93-64 past EuroBasket 2015 debutants Iceland, who suffered their third straight loss. The front-runners of Group B showed no mercy with bottom-placed Iceland and turned up in the third-quarter to put the start-to-finish lead beyond doubt. The fact that all players of head coach Aleksandar Djordjevic got their names on the score sheets underlined the powerful team's performance.
With the third victory in as many games, Serbia made a big step towards the knockout stage in Lille, France. They encounter Turkey while Iceland clash with Spain on Wednesday.
At the second game of Group B, Germany suffered their second loss in a row as Turkey staged a frenetic first-quarter performance to smooth the way for their second win at the third game.
The Turks caught a fairy-tale start into the match by establishing a 20-point advantage within the end of the first quarter. The hosts meanwhile lacked in accuracy, especially from the three-point area, therefore they had to take a 24-41 deficit into the break.
Germany started strong into the third quarter and reduced the arrears (38-48). However, Turkey remained unfazed and pulled away to increase their advantage to 17-points (60-43) before the end of the third quarter.
Despite a late fourth-quarter comeback by the hosts, where they reduced the deficit to six points (66-73), Turkey were able to protect their five-point advantage (80-75) to the end.
The Germans needs a victory over Italy to maintain their chances for the next round.
Italy's surprising 105-98 victory over Spain concluded day three in Group B. The Italians sewed up their second victory by courtesy of their NBA professionals Danilo Gallinari (29 points) and Marco Belinelli (27 points) who provided overall 56 points, more than half of Italy's final score.
Despite Pau Gasol's game-high 34 points, favourites Spain suffered their second loss.
After Tuesday, Serbia leads Group B with six points, followed by Italy and Turkey both with 5 points, Spain and Germany both with four points and bottom-placed Iceland with 3 points.
