体坛英语新闻:Former Australian rules football star approached to join politics
CANBERRA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Australian Labor Party has reportedly approached and encouraged former Australian Football League (AFL) star Adam Goodes to pursue a career in politics.
Goodes, a two-time league best and fairest, retired at the end of the 2015 season, and has been approached by Northern Territory Labor Senator and Olympic Gold Medalist Nova Peris to consider a post-football career in politics.
Goodes was also granted the coveted Australian of the Year award in 2014 for his community work through the Go Foundation and his advocacy against racism in Australia.
An Indigenous player who, throughout his career, called out racism in the crowd, Goodes was involved in a number of controversies earlier in 2015.
He was consistently the victim of crowd booing, which was labeled as blatant "racism" by the AFL, despite Goodes' sometimes questionable on-field actions.
Goodes was a two-time premiership player with the Sydney Swans, and was included in the AFL's Indigenous Team of the Century.
