体坛英语新闻:Su Bingtian sets 60m Asian indoor record in Portland

PORTLAND, United States, March 18 (Xinhua) -- China's star sprinter Su Bingtian broke a 23-year-long Asian indoor record here on Friday en route to finished fifth in the men's 60 meters event at the IAAF World Indoor Championships.

The 26-year-old Su, the first ever sub-10s Chinese in 100m, clocked 6.64 seconds to finish on top in his heat group and then dashed to a personal best of 6.50s in the semifinals, beating the 23-year-long Asian indoor record of 6.51s set by Qatar's Talal Mansour in 1993.

In the final, Su clocked 6.54 to finish fifth. And his mark is 0.02s shy of the result when he finished fourth at the last edition of indoor worlds in Sopot, Poland, two years ago.

America sprinter Trayvon Bromell, 100m bronze medalist at Beijing World Chmapionships last year, took the title with a prersonal best of 6.47s. Jamaican veteran Asafa Powell, who sprinted to a world leading of 6.44s in the heats and semis repectively, lagged 0.03s behind to finish as the runner-up. Ramon Gittens of Barbados finished third in 6.51s.

The other Chinese sprinter Xie Zhenye, a gold medalist at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, finished fourth with a personal best of 6.53s.
