RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Sweden shocked hosts Brazil 4-3 on penalties to advance to the final of the Olympic women's football tournament after their semi-final match finished 0-0 after extra time.

Brazil, one of the favorites for the tournament, thrashed Sweden 5-1 in the group stage 10 days ago, but when Marta displayed her full array of tight control and dribbling skills today, the Nordic showed a strong defence in the front of Brazilians.

Goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl made the difference for Sweden as she saved kicks from Cristiane and then Andressa, on Brazil's fifth kick. Brazil keeper Barbara could save only one, from Kosovare Asllani, meaning Lisa Dahlkvist could slot home the 4-3 winner.

"Playing at this wonderful stadium. I can only say frustration, no other way. I will not apologize as we did dominate the match and tried to find the best way to score. Through the whole 120 minutes we did try our best, we tried everything, that's why it is so frustrating," said Vadao, the head coach of Brazil.

"There were few chances and though we had control of the game we had few opportunities and we know what happened in the penalties," he added.

Germany, who won three consecutive bronzes between 2000 and 2008, defeated Canada 2-0 in the second semi-final in Mineirao.

Melanie Behringer's 20th minute penalty and Sara Daebritz's goal on the hour ensured a comfortable victory.

Sweden will meet Germany in the gold medal match on Tuesday, and Brazil play Canada for bronzes in Sau Paulo the same day.
